Things To Do On Your North Carolina Beach Vacation

Try Surfing - its not too late

E-mail Print PDF

Growing up we used to visit the Jersey shore, and with the waves there, surfing was never really possible.  But here in North Carolina, there's plenty of places to surf.  In fact, most mornings you can look out the back deck and see the surfers battling the waves as the tides roll in.  If you don't have your own surf board, there are plenty of places to rent them in town.   If you're not quite to the point of standing up as you ride the waves, body boarding is a great way to get the same feeling but without falling over.

We include a couple of body boards with the vacation rental - take them out to the beach and enjoy.  Just bring them, and yourself, back in one piece.

Go surf fishing right on the beach!

North Carolina offers some of the best surf fishing on the Atlantic.  There are all kinds of fish you can reel in at various times of the year.  Sitting on the back deck, you can almost always see a few fishermen (and women and kids!) on the beach with their poles planted firmly in the sands, relaxing on a chair, watching their rod for signs of life.

If you want to fish more effectively, you need to understand high and low tides, and how to use the tides to your advantage. The local tide chart is provided below.

Coastal kite flying - for kids (and grown-ups) of all ages

E-mail Print PDF

Did you know kite flying started in China almost 3000 years ago?   Ben Franklin may have made it "shockingly" famous a couple hundred years ago, but the Chinese own the inventorship.   Over the past 300 decades a lot of improvements have been made, but one thing that hasn't changed is that it is still a lot of fun.  There are kites of all shapes and sizes now, and the North Carolina coast, where Wilbur & Orville used the winds to achieve the first flight, is a great place to have fun with them.  The strong winds and open landscape provide great freedom sailing the skies.  There's no limit on how high they can go out here.  Last summer, we accidentally let go of one of our kites, and it disappeared out of view up the coast and out over the waters, gaining and gaining height.  I don't know if it ever landed.

Sailing kites is fun for kids of all ages.  The younger ones just love controlling something that can go so high in the sky, and so do a few of us older ones.  So bring your kite, or just pick one up at the local store, and head to the beach for some fun.
